All about this course
Caring for people who are terminally ill or approaching the end of their life is one of the most emotionally demanding — and most rewarding — areas of health and social care. It calls for compassion, sensitivity and a sound understanding of how to provide holistic, person-centred support to both the patient and the people who love them.
This course explains the difference between palliative and end-of-life care, how to recognise the stages of a terminal illness, and how to plan and deliver quality care that manages symptoms and preserves dignity. It then covers the practical duties that follow a death, including last offices and documentation, how to support grieving families, and the legal framework — including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment — that governs care at the end of life.
This course is suitable for care workers, support workers, and anyone working in a hospice, care home, or home care setting who wants a solid grounding in palliative and end-of-life care practice.
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

Units covered
- Unit 1 – End-of-Life and Palliative Care: This unit explains what palliative and end-of-life care mean and how they differ, the types and stages of terminal illness, and how to build a holistic, person-centred care plan that manages pain and other symptoms while preserving comfort and dignity.
- Unit 2 – Care after Death and Further Support: This unit covers the practical duties that must be carried out after a death, how to support grieving families through bereavement, and the legal aspects of end-of-life care, including mental capacity, advance decisions and death certification.
- Unit 3 – Course assessment: A final multiple choice assessment covering everything from units 1 and 2. You must score 80% or higher to pass and receive your certificate.
